Introduction
We will start with the virtual tour of
Interstate 275 as we make progress from the Howard Frankland Bridge
northward to
Bearss
Avenue (Exit 53)and the northern terminus of
Interstate 275 at Interstate 75. Along the way we’ll stop at each exit as
we progress our way northbound.
You will notice that, like the
Interstate 275 St. Petersburg tour, each picture is organized in a
gallery format. This allows you to see a thumbnail view of the
picture being described. If you want to view a larger version,

When this segment of Interstate 275 was
originally built in the early 1960’s as a westward extension of Interstate
4 across the Howard Frankland Bridge, the interstate highway was just four
lanes with what appeared to be a diamond interchange on the Memorial
Highway portion. The Kennedy Blvd portion features a southbound
entry and a northbound exit as it appears today. For years after it
was constructed it served its traffic needs until the opening of the new
Tampa International Airport terminal in 1971. The opening of
Tampa
International Airport plus increased traffic justified the reconfiguration of the exit
at Memorial Highway a few years later as part of an Interstate 275
widening project that took place. A flyover ramp from Interstate 275
northbound to FL 60
westbound was constructed in 1976 enabling non-stop access to Tampa
International Airport from
St. Petersburg that would benefit St. Petersburg residents. In addition,
access to Cypress Street was constructed, which was permanently removed in
2007.
When the improvements were completed,
Interstate 275 was widened from 4 to 6 lanes north of Memorial Highway.
South of Memorial Highway Interstate 275 remained at 4 lanes until 1991
when the second span of the Howard Frankland Bridge was built expanding
the highway’s capacity from 4 to 8 lanes. Today a short 4 lane segment
from Kennedy Blvd to Memorial Highway is what remains, creating
bottlenecks during the morning and evening rush hour as Interstate 275
narrows.
Improvements are now in progress (as of
2009) to
expand Interstate 275 from its 4 and 6 lanes to 8 lanes from Memorial
Highway to the Ashley/Tampa Street complex next to downtown and is being
done in segments. In
addition, the FL 60 connection from Interstate 275 to the Veterans Expressway
entrance is getting a major makeover with completion scheduled for 2010.
Tampa Bay Interstates (the Florida DOT site for Interstate construction in
the Tampa Bay area) has more information on these improvements including
graphics and photos; it’s worth a look!

What to expect when entering Tampa on northbound Interstate 275
The flashers will activate when heavy congestion is taking place.
Unfortunately this sign was destroyed in an accident; I am not
sure if the Florida DOT will replace this sign following the
major work taking place. |
 |
Advance signage for Exits 39A and 39B
Remain in the right lane for
Kennedy Blvd. or in the second right lane for Tampa International Airport
and Spruce Street. |
 |
More advance signage
Another reminder to be in the right lanes for either Kennedy Blvd. or Tampa International Airport. |
 |
Use Exit 39A for Cypress Street and Exit 40B for International Plaza
You used to use Exit 39B for Cypress Street but that ramp has been dismantled due to the airport interchange project. Instead, use Exit 39A (Kennedy Blvd.) to Westshore Blvd. then north (going under Interstate 275) to Cypress Street. Exit 40B is Lois Avenue, which terminates at Spruce Street (FL 616) and is an entrance to the upscale shopping mall. |
 |
Use Exit 39A for Spruce Street or
Exit 40B for International Plaza
In this updated photo the Cypress Street legend was replaced by a Spruce Street legend mounted on a sign plate that covers the old Cypress Street designation. You can no longer go directly to Cypress Street from northbound Interstate 275; rather, you can go to Spruce Street and turn south on O'Brien Street to reach Cypress Street. |
 |
Final opportunity for Exit 39A, Kennedy Blvd.
If you are headed for Kennedy Blvd. or Westshore Plaza, use this exit as this is FL 60 east. If you are headed to Tampa International Airport you definitely want to use Exit 39B. |
 |
Final opportunity for Exit 39B
If you are headed to Tampa International Airport, this is your exit. Notice how the right lane drops off here and sometimes traffic slows to a crawl on northbound Interstate 275 during the morning and afternoon commute.
Also notice that the legend for Cypress Street has been greened
out as the ramp to Cypress Street as part of Exit 39B no longer
exists. |
 |
Final Opportunity for Exit 39B Updated
Same signage as the previous photo, only Spruce Street now takes the place of where the Cypress Street legend used to exist on the sign to the right. |
 |
First mileage sign in Tampa on Interstate 275 northbound
Lois Avenue is 1-1/4 mile ahead, while Dale Mabry Highway (US 92) is 1-3/4 mile ahead and Armenia/Howard Avenues is 2-3/4 miles away. |
 |
Signage for Raymond James Stadium and George Steinbrenner Field
This signage was recently erected when Legends Field was renamed in honor of the owner of the New York Yankees, which hold their spring training here in Tampa. Raymond James Stadium (known as RayJay) is the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Use Exits 40B (Lois Avenue) or 41 (Dale Mabry Highway) to reach either venue. |
 |
Signage for Legends Field
This is the same signage as the last picture, only the difference is that is bears the Legends Field name before it was renamed. |
Interstate 275 Southbound at Exit 39
 |
You can access the Veterans Expressway here
Simply remain in the right lane to Exit 39. Once there, follow FL 60 to the Veterans Expressway entrance. |
 |
Advance signage for FL 60 to Tampa International Airport and Clearwater
Use the right lane for access to Tampa International Airport as well as FL 60 to Clearwater and the Veterans Expressway (FL Toll 589). Additionally, this is the last Tampa exit before the Howard Frankland Bridge; continuing past this exit will result in you having to travel 7 miles across the Howard Frankland Bridge to Interstate 275's first exit in St. Petersburg, FL 687/4 St N
(also known as Exit 32) |

Final opportunity to exit Interstate 275 southbound in Tampa
Headed to Tampa International Airport to catch a flight? This is your exit! |
Perspective of
Interstate 275 at Exit 39
These perspective
photos of Interstate 275 at Exit 39 looked as construction began on the
Tampa International Airport interchanges project. The old signage
shown below no longer exists as the landscape of Interstate 275 at Exit
39 has changed significantly.
 |
Interstate 275 south to St. Petersburg is just around the corner
While this sign may have the look of a permanent sign, this is a temporary sign erected by the contractor working on the Tampa Airport interchanges project taking place. This is the approximate location of an overhead sign gantry that used to be here. |
 |
Closeup of Interstate 275 St. Petersburg sign
This is seen from Cypress Street where FL 60 crosses over. As this sign is a temporary contractor installed sign, more permanent signage will be installed as the Tampa Airport interchange project progresses. |
 |
Overhead for Interstate 275 and FL 60
Remain in the far right lane for Interstate 275 south to St. Petersburg or the second right lane for Interstate 275 north to downtown Tampa and Interstate 4. Remain in the left lane to continue east on FL 60 via Kennedy Blvd. |
 |
Signage for FL 60 west to Clearwater and Air Cargo
This photo was taken prior to the
sign being mounted by the contractor on the Tampa Airport
Interchanges project. As you can see, most signage nowadays is
fabricated by a private firm under contract to Florida DOT or by
subcontract to a contractor working on a Florida DOT project.
Temporary signage is governed by the maintenance of traffic
plans for a project. |
 |
Signage for FL 60 to Clearwater and Air Cargo installed in its right place
To reach Air Cargo, follow FL 60 to the Veterans Expressway entrance. Proceed north on the Veterans Expressway (but stay in the free lanes to the right) to Hillsborough Avenue; right on Hillsborough Avenue for about a half a mile to the airport's Air Cargo entrance. |
 |
FL 60 crossing Cypress Street
This is seen looking west on Cypress Street. Access to Interstate 275 south is made by turning left just after you go under the overpass. |
 |
Life underneath FL 60 at Cypress Street
This photo shows the many bridge pillars and concrete beams supporting FL 60 as it crosses Cypress Street. This overpass bridge was built around 1976 along with the flyover from northbound Interstate 275 from St. Petersburg as part of improvements made back then. |
 |
Overhead for Interstate 275 and FL 60
This is the same overhead for Interstate 275 and FL 60 as described in an earlier photograph. Notice that the gantry is supported by a temporary support while the permanent support had to be removed to make way for construction taking place; I imagine this overhead will be replaced by a more sleeker looking overhead when the Tampa Airport interchanges project is done around 2010. |
 |
Overheads for Interstate 275 north and FL 60 east
Remain in the right lane for Interstate 275 north to downtown Tampa and Interstate 4 or the left lane for FL 60 east via Kennedy Blvd. Going under this bridge is like a tunnel effect as these are the original mainline Interstate 275 overpass bridges built back in 1962 in its early Interstate 4 heydays and the center median was bridged in 1976 when improvements to Interstate 275 in Tampa were made. |
 |
New Overheads for Interstate 275 north and FL 60 east
Remain in the right lane for
Interstate 275 north to downtown Tampa and Interstate 4 or the
left lane for FL 60 east via Kennedy Blvd. just like the old
signage. The new signage for northbound Interstate 275 is
that motorists are cautioned to reduce speed to 20 mph as the
ramp is a circular steep ramp. You can also see the old
overheads from the previous photo in the background. The
old overheads mounted on the bridge no longer exist. |
 |
FL 60 Eastbound
This is FL 60 looking east as it transitions from Memorial Highway to West Kennedy Blvd. at this traffic signal. Westshore Plaza is immediately to the left at this signal, while a short continuation of Kennedy Blvd. connecting with southbound Interstate 275 is to the right. Incidentally, Kennedy Blvd. used to be Grand Central Blvd. until 1963 when it was renamed in honor of President John F. Kennedy, who visited Tampa just before our country mourned his untimely death by an assassin's bullet in Dallas. |
 |
Westbound on FL 60 going under Interstate 275
Notice that the left lane ends in 1200 feet just after you go under the overpass. There is no access to Interstate 275 from here; to go south on Interstate 275 requires a transit through Tampa International Airport. However, if you are headed to Tampa International Airport, the Veterans Expressway or FL 60 west to Clearwater then you are good to go. |
 |
Flyover from northbound
Interstate 275 to westbound FL 60
Notice that the ramp to Cypress Street is no more, as it was
dismantled to allow for construction of new ramps from eastbound
FL 60 and from Tampa International Airport. |
 |
New exit for FL 616,
Spruce Street This is contractor
installed temporary signage for the new exit onto FL 616, Spruce
Street, from westbound FL 60. In order to get to Cypress
Street, follow the new Spruce Street exit to O'Brien Street,
then south on O'Brien Street to Cypress Street. |
 |
New overhead for
Interstate 275 and FL 60 Here are
newly installed overheads for southbound Interstate 275 to St.
Petersburg and northbound Interstate 275 to downtown Tampa and
Interstate 4 as well as FL 60 east. You can see the newly
constructed direct ramp access from Tampa International Airport
to St. Petersburg via southbound Interstate 275 to the right. |
