The Pedestrian Overpass North of 22
Av N
Introduction
The fourth
segment of Interstate 275 brought the highway from its temporary
end at a point just south of 50 Av N to a
point just south of 22 Av N, bringing interstate access to both 38
Av N and 22 Av N. At the 38 Av N interchange
(Exit 25) the median is wide enough to accommodate a partial
interchange for an expressway but plans for this were nixed long
before the interstate was built. Both interchanges
feature a full service entry and exit system.
38 Av N takes motorists to the
Bay Pines VA Medical Center as well as
Madeira Beach for westbound and the
Allendale Terrace and
Shore Acres neighborhoods in St. Petersburg for eastbound.
On the other hand, 22 Av N takes motorists to
Tyrone Square Mall for westbound and the distinctive
Snell Isle neighborhood as well as
Sunken Gardens for eastbound.
There is signage
at the 22 Av N exit directing motorists to the VA Medical Center
at Bay Pines. That hospital can also be reached using 38 Av
N as well, but if you are coming from the north 38 Av N is a
shorter choice. According to
a Dr. Delay article in the St. Petersburg Times, the reason
the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines could not be signed is that
Federal guidelines call for up to two destinations on a guide sign
and 38 Av N already was at the two
destination limit. The two destinations on 38 Av N are Madeira Beach and
Redington Beach.

Advance signage for 38 Av N
This is mounted on the overpass carrying 54 Av N over Interstate 275. Notice the blank green space on the bottom of the sign; this covers up a sign goof mistakenly identifying the exit only lane as the lane we are in now; the right lane that forms from the westbound 54 Av N on ramp is the dedicated exit only lane for 38 Av N. |
 |
You can reach Madeira Beach and the Redington Beaches on 38 Av N
Simply head west on 38 Av N to Tyrone Blvd (US Alt. 19), then north on Tyrone Blvd to the FL 666 interchange. West on FL 666 to both Madeira Beach and the Redington Beaches (via FL 699). |

 |
Final opportunity for 38 Av N
Prior to 1989, this used to be a through right lane and an exit ramp; those in the left lane of Interstate 275 had to merge as the lane ended. When Interstate 275 was re-striped in 1989, the left lane became a through lane and the right lane became the exit only lane. |

A newly installed Interstate 275 shield
This was also taken from the side street alongside Interstate 275. It was erected in 2005 as part of sign replacement during the concrete pavement rehabilitation project. |

These new shields were erected from 62 Av N to 13 Av N during the concrete rehabilitation project on Interstate 275 which was finished in October 2005. |

Intermediate signage for 38 Av N
Notice how the sign is mounted on the pedestrian overpass, just above the entrance ramp from 22 Av N. |
 |
Final opportunity to exit Interstate 275 at 38 Av N
Notice that the sign support as well as the 38 Av N sign itself has been there since this section of Interstate 275 opened in 1974. |
 |
A new sign for 38 Av N
The sign support from 1974 mentioned in
the previous photo is still there, but the sign was
recently changed as the original 38 Av N sign - which
was in service since 1974 as a vintage button copy sign
- was taken down by contractors working on the variable
message sign project. |

The control city for Interstate 275 southbound, Bradenton, is properly signed. |
 |
Interstate 275 as it crosses 50 Av N and Haines Road
Haines Road is a diagonal road running from US 19 and 70 Av N in Pinellas Park to the intersection of Martin Luther King St N and 34 Av N. It used to be a state road at one time (FL 689); in fact, it used to carry US 19 on a temporary basis while 34th Street was being constructed to link up to the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge (historical info from Robert Droz's US Highways site). |

Advance signage for 22 Av N
This is just before crossing 38 Av N on Interstate 275 southbound. Notice the different font that was used for the sign itself. The original signage used to be mounted on four heavy duty posts that were taller than a partial overhead sign. |

This is seen from the off ramp from Interstate 275 onto 38 Av N. Notice the old exit number to the right. |
 |
You can reach the VA Medical Center and Sunken Gardens from 22 Av N
For Sunken Gardens, head east on 22 Av N to 4 St N, then south on 4 St N for about 1/4 mile; the City of St. Petersburg owned and operated attraction will then be on your left side. For the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines, head west on 22 Av N to Tyrone Blvd, then north on Tyrone Blvd across the Seminole Bridge to the VA Medical Center. |
 |
Closeup of the VA Medical Center/Sunken Gardens sign
Seen from a side street alongside Interstate 275. You wonder why you have to exit at 22 Av N for the VA Medical Center when 38 Av N is closer? It's simple: Federal MUTCD guidelines don't allow more than two destinations on the same sign, according to a
St. Petersburg Times article. |
 |
Final opportunity to exit Interstate 275 at 22 Av N
Notice how the sign is mounted on the pedestrian overpass. To the immediate right of the pedestrian overpass is
the now-closed Norwood Secondary School, where students
who have major disciplinary issues with the Pinellas
County School District were sent to (usually for one or two semesters). |
 |
Upcoming exits for
Downtown St. Petersburg The
three exits for Downtown St. Petersburg - 5 Av N (FL
595), Interstate 375 and Interstate 175 - are
advertised. This is as we cross the 30 Av N
overpass and is mounted in the center median until
recently. |
 |
Upcoming exits for
Downtown St. Petersburg II
The sign for the upcoming exits for Downtown St.
Petersburg was recently relocated from the center median
gantry onto a sign bridge gantry of its own.
Notice one of the many new variable message signs being
installed which will extend the motorist information
system southward from 54 Av N to 54 Av S. |

 |
Advance signage for 22 Av N at Interstate 375
This sign was replaced as a result of the tanker accident that happened on the flyover crossing northbound Interstate 275 in early 2007. It is also missing an Exit 24 tab. |
 |
22 Av N is just around the corner
Notice the dedicated right exit lane as well as a recently installed Interstate 275 reassurance shield. |
 |
Final opportunity to exit Interstate 275 at 22 Av N
The right lane drops into the off ramp for 22 Av N. Use 22 Av N to reach Sunken Gardens and the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines. |

Westbound on 22 Av N
Taken underneath the southbound lanes of Interstate 275. Notice the newly placed sign directing motorists to southbound Interstate 275 from 22 Av N. You can also see the massive three column pier holding up the steel girders of Interstate 275's southbound lanes. |
 |
Interstate 275 at 30 Av N
This is looking eastbound on 30 Av N as it goes under Interstate 275. Notice the intersection of 22 St N in the foreground just before going under the highway. Being a low volume city street, an interchange at 30 Av N was not justified. |
