Introduction
The third
extension of Interstate 275 brought the highway from just south of
Gandy Blvd. to a point just south of 50 Av N. 54 Av N was reconstructed as a four-lane road
with a divided section from Haines Road to 16 St N. Haines
Road was realigned with 50 Av N
to better serve the residents of the surrounding area. Originally
this exit was slated to be located at 62 Av N;
however, traffic volume at the time when Interstate 275 was proposed
did not justify an interchange at 62 Av N as well as the hilly
terrain in the area. Instead, 54 Av N was selected.
54 Av N features a
double exit northbound and double entrance southbound ramp system, as
well as a single entrance northbound and single exit southbound for
a full service interchange. Motorists headed westbound on 54
Av N can access
Lealman (an unincorporated community
sandwiched in between
St. Petersburg and
Pinellas Park) and
Kenneth City as well as
Northside Hospital and
Tampa Bay Heart Institute. On the other hand,
motorists headed eastbound on 54 Av N can
access the public school complex consisting of
Sexton Elementary
School, Northeast High School and
Meadowlawn Middle School (via 16
St N).
Ever wonder why one
of the southbound lanes of Interstate 275 as it passes under 54 Av N
has to be repaired before the 2005 concrete rehabilitation project?
You may be interested to know that the two right southbound lanes as
Interstate 275 passes under 54 Av N were constructed on top of a
spring, which feeds into a nearby lake and eventually into Joe's
Creek.

Advance signage for 54 Av N coming up in one mile
Notice the hospital sign (the sign with the letter H on a blue background) on the top left corner; you can reach Northside Hospital and Tampa Bay Heart Institute from here by heading west on 54 Av N to 49 St N. North on 49 St N for four blocks and the hospital will be on your left at the blinker for 58 Av N. |
 |
Destination signage for Lealman and Kenneth City
Lealman is an unincorporated community north of St. Petersburg while Kenneth City is one of Pinellas County's 24 incorporated municipalities. Lealman has a significant identity thanks to the efforts of the Lealman Community Association, which was formed primarily to fend off annexation attempts from both St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park. |
 |
54 Av N is coming up in 1/2 mile
Again we see the hospital sign stating that Northside Hospital is close by here. If you are headed for Bayfront Medical Center or All Children's Hospital, keep going - another 4 miles to Exit 22 and Interstate 175 which will take you to the two well known hospitals in downtown St. Petersburg on 6 St S. |
 |
One of the many variable message signs
Taken north of the 62 Av N overcrossing, this is one of the many variable message signs located throughout Interstate 275. This sign in particular does double duty: One being operated by the Florida DOT to communicate travel distances and times (like the distance to the Pinellas Bayway as pictured) and the other by the City of St. Petersburg for downtown event parking advisories. |
 |
Final Opportunity for 54 Av N
Notice the ramp advisory speed of 40 mph due to the design of the ramp.
This sign gantry is the original 1972 gantry when this
section of Interstate 275 was constructed. Notice how
the single small support post is too close to the roadway
which has the potential of the sign support being knocked
down in an accident despite the guardrail protecting the
sign. |
 |
Final Opportunity for 54 Av N New Signage
Recently the Florida DOT took
down the original sign gantry that was in place since 1972
when this section of Interstate 275 was constructed and
replaced it with a more modern sign gantry. As you
will see, the signage is easier to read and interpret than
the old signage. Also, the sign support is much larger
and relocated well off to the side of the highway.
However, the ramp advisory speed of 40 mph still remains. |

Advance signage for 54 Av N coming up in one mile as we cross 38 Av N
The hospital sign is for Northside Hospital and Tampa Bay Heart Institute which is reached via Exit 26B and west on 54 Av N to 49 St N; north on 49 St N for 4 blocks and the hospital is on your left. The 54 Av N advance sign has been around since Interstate 275 opened in 1974. |
 |
Destination signage for Lealman and Kenneth City
Both communities are reached from Exit 26B, 54 Av N westbound. |

This is seen from a side street alongside Interstate 275 on the east side. |
 |
Closeup view of the 54 Av N intermediate signage
The signage was erected in 1989 as part of a sign replacement project; however, the gantry the sign is erected on has been there since this section of Interstate 275 was built in 1972. |

Intermediate signage for 54 Av N
This is looking north on Interstate 275. Notice the dedicated right exit only lane that serves the two 54 Av N exits. |
 |
Final opportunity for 54 Av N eastbound
Those headed for Sexton Elementary School, Northeast High School or Meadowlawn Middle School (via 16 St N) should exit here. The signage was erected in 1989 as part of the sign replacement project; however, the overhead gantry was erected around 1977 after a truck accident took out the original gantry erected in 1972 when Interstate 275 was built. |
 |
Final opportunity for 54 Av N westbound
Those headed to Lealman, Kenneth City or Northside Hospital (via 49 St N) should exit here. Beware of the 20 mph circular loop ramp as you exit! |
 |
Closeup of the final opportunity for 54 Av N westbound signage
Both the signage and the gantry it is erected on were constructed in 1989 as part of the sign replacement project. When this section of Interstate 275 was opened in 1972 the signage was erected on the overpass bridge but it lacked exit only signage warning motorists that the lane exits onto 54 Av N westbound. |
 |
Northbound Interstate 275 reassurance shield just past 54 Av N
This is one of many Interstate 275 shields erected in October 2005 as part of a pavement rehabilitation project from 62 Av N to 13 Av N which included sign replacement as well. The Interstate 275 shields are much easier to read and interpret. |

The intersection of 54 Av N at the southbound Interstate 275 off ramp
This is looking east on 54 Av N. Notice the mast arm traffic signals installed as part of the 2005 concrete rehabilitation project. |

This is seen from the overpass crossing over Interstate 275. |
 |
Northbound Interstate 275 and the westbound 54 Av N off ramp (Exit 26B)
This is seen from the 54 Av N overpass. No matter why motorists must slow to 20 mph due to the design of the circular ramp. |
 |
Closeup of the directional sign to St. Petersburg
This is on 54 Av N westbound just as the Interstate 275 northbound off ramp merges with 54 Av N and becomes the Interstate 275 southbound on ramp. I believe this sign is erroneous as we are already in St. Petersburg and the sign should read Bradenton instead. Besides, Bradenton is already mentioned as far as Ulmerton Road! |
 |
62 Av N looking eastbound
Here we see Interstate 275's southbound lanes in the
foreground and the northbound lanes in the background.
Notice how 62 Av N is a four lane undivided highway without
a center turn lane as 62 Av N is a Pinellas County
maintained road and the fact that we are in unincorporated
Pinellas County - Lealman to be exact - straddling the
border of the City of St. Petersburg. |
 |
62 Av N looking
westbound Notice how the
northbound lanes of Interstate 275 are lower than the
southbound lanes. This is because Interstate 275 is on
a superelevated embankment here. As for 62 Av N west
of Interstate 275, it is four lanes until just after 34 St N
(US 19) when it becomes two lanes all the way to 66 St N (FL
693). Moreover, 62 Av N west of US 19 basically forms
the southern border of the City of Pinellas Park for the
remainder of the route. |
